United States: Yurok tribe joins lawsuit over Klamath River

Joining conservationists and local fishermen, the Yurok tribe will participate in a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Reclamation. The goal of the suit is to set aside more water in the river flow for the salmon in the Klamath Irrigation project. The Yurok Tribe of California declared a state of emergency in early October in response to the recent deaths of as many as 30,000 salmon in the Klamath River. Sue Masten, chairwoman of the tribe, stated, “We are forced to take this step because Reclamation's failed management caused the deaths of tens of thousands of salmon that our tribal members rely on for food, our culture and our way of life.”
