South Africa: Volunteers Seek to Digitally Preserve San Rock Art

A group of volunteer rock art enthusiasts and archaeologists are working with the Natal Museum to create a database of digital images of San rock paintings from throughout the Drakensberg region. Natural erosion has taken its toll on the delicate designs traced by the San’s ancestors, adding urgency to the undertaking. Some paintings date back as far as 3,000 years ago, and many are on private property and have yet to be recorded. The paintings offer a rare glimpse of the past practices and beliefs of the San, the indigenous inhabitants of the KwaZulu-Natal area and of much of southern Africa.
