INDIA: Indigenous fishermen insist on exclusive fishing rights

Indigenous fishermen living around Chilika Lake in Orissa are asking for exclusive fishing rights and insisting on a full ban on prawn farms. The state government will not comply with indigenous requests until the Chilika Fishing Regulation Bill is presented before the assembly in March. There have been several confrontations with the police following clashes between the indigenous fishermen and non-fishermen over the fishing rights.
