Thousands of Algerians marched in Paris last week to protest the continuing detention of six Amazigh activists by Algerian authorities. The detainees are accused of interfering with local elections last October; the Amazigh community conducted a wide boycott of the elections as a response to what they regard as repressive government policies. Three of the detainees had been on a 34-day hunger strike, at the time of the most recent report. Algerian academics, artists, journalists, lawyers and intellectuals have joined with the activist group Coordination of the Tribes of Kabylie to condemn the detentions and call for the immediate release of the individuals.
