CANADA: Aboriginal Pipeline Group seeks private funding for gas pipeline

The Aboriginal Pipeline Group (APG), formed by a consortium of First Nation communities, has failed to meet its announced target of securing funding by the end of January. The money would go toward the APG’s one-third share in the proposed Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline. The pipeline is to be a joint venture between the APG and several oil companies, and it was thought the government would assist the APG in raising the necessary funds. However, the government has chosen not to provide subsisidies or loan guarantees, and the APG is now in talks with private companies. It is expected that the APG will reach a deal with TransCanada PipeLines Ltd.
