Mainor Ortiz Delgado, a member of the Indigenous Bribri Tubolwak clan, was shot in the leg by a trespasser on February 9, 2020, on his farm in Rio Azul de Salitre in southwestern Costa Rica. This act of is part of an ongoing wave of violence spurring from the Costa Rican government’s failure to implement Indigenous land rights and bring sanctions on non-Indigenous settlers on Indigenous land.

The Costa Rican Superintendency of Telecommunications (SUTEL by its Spanish acronym) issued instructions to award two projects in the amount of $47.9 million to bring telephone and internet services to 14 Indigenous territories in the Atlantic and South Zone of the country.

The Agrarian Court of the II Judicial Circuit of San José, Costa Rica, recently revoked a sentence of Judge Jean Carlo Céspedes Mora of Buenos Aires of Puntarenas in which he ordered the eviction of Indigenous people who had recovered land within the Brörán Indigenous territory, according to website CulturaCR.net.

On August 8-10, 2019, Indigenous leaders held the first National Indigenous Congress (CONGRESO INDÍGENA NACIONAL - COIN) in San Antonio de Belen outside San Jose, Costa Rica, where seven of the eight Costa Rican Indigenous Nations met to discuss the challenges facing the Indigenous population in the country.
On the evening of March 18, 2019, Indigenous leader Sergio Rojas Ortiz was assassinated in his residence in Salitre de Buenos Aires, part of the Puntarenas province, after being shot multiple times.
