NIGERIA: Retired General Takes Government to Task for Attack on His Village

A former army chief of staff and retired war hero, Lt. Gen. Victor Malu, sat in front of a judicial commission early this month to air his grievances against soldiers who attacked his Tse-Adoor village, claiming they killed as many as 500 people. Three members of his family were killed and his house was burned, leading him to suggest the military action was directed at him. Malu is seeking compensation for the villagers and an apology from President Olusegun Obasanjo. The commission was convened to inquire into a series of inter-community conflicts in Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau and Taraba states.
