After months of threats and accusations, the Confederation of Indigenous Nations of Ecuador (CONAIE) has formally broken its alliance with President Gutierrez. This virtually terminates the coalition, known as the Pachakutik movement, which brought Gutierrez to power, and included leftist groups, former military personal, and various civil society groups. CONAIE charges Gutierrez of reneging on his promises of promoting peace, equality and self-determination, and turning politically Right and stylistically authoritarian.
