WEST PAPUA: Indonesian government holds mine accountable for deaths

Last month’s massive landslide at Indonesia's Freeport gold and copper mine in West Papua that killed eight employees was likely the result of management negligence, a government official announced this week. This is the first time in the company’s 35-year history that the Indonesian government holds Freeport accountable for environmental, human rights, and safety problems.
