US: Goshute plan to allow storage of nuclear waste on reservation

In a move that has horrified Utah state officials, the 70-member Goshute tribe has decided to accept a $50 million deal to turn its reservation into a storage site for nuclear waste. In defense of their decision, the Goshute cite their sovereignty over their own land, which renders them immune from most environmental regulations. In an effort to halt the Goshute’s plans, the state of Utah has banned the transport of nuclear waste along the road to the reservation and has filed several lawsuits.
