UNITED STATES: Under-funded BIA faces more budget

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley, Jr., told the Gallup Independent he was stunned to learn this week that the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) could see a $55 million budget cut. The Bush administration, which has not yet consulted tribal leaders of the BIA Budget Advisory Council, will ask Congress to approve the reduction for fiscal year 2006.
