The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma temporarily stopped work on its bingo hall site in Aurelius, New York on August 12 after defying a town stop-work order on July 30 and a state court order on August 8. Seneca-Cayuga leaders say they have sovereign rights on their 64,000 acre territory, exempting them from local zoning and building laws.The Tribe has filed a “notice of removal,” asking a federal court to uphold their sovereign rights.
