UNITED STATES: Contemporary indigenous issues examined at conference

The International Indian Treaty Council and Independent Traditional Seminole Nation of Florida co-hosted the 32nd annual International Indian Treaty Council Conference from February 9–12 in Fort Drum, Florida. The conference featured a series of workshops and panel discussions about critical issues facing contemporary indigenous peoples, including land rights, sovereignty, health, environmental justice, spirituality, fair trade, economic self-determination, and protection of sacred sites, among many others. In addition to speeches by several Indian leaders from Latin America, the United States, and Canada, a delegation of Borikén Taíno community leaders presented an update on the current situation of the Taíno People in Borikén (Puerto Rico), and elsewhere in the Caribbean. The conference also included a variety of cultural programs and traditional ceremonial practices, such as a Sunrise ceremony, drum song ceremony, and an indigenous-only Elders and Youth Circle Gathering.
