With lawlessness and cattle-rustling as the defining characteristics of the eastern Ugandan region of Karamoja, the Ugandan army has announced that it is now recruiting Karamojong warriors to fight the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group that is threatening the area’s populations. Local organizations, however, fear that the arming could reverse recent efforts to reduce the region’s gun culture, eventually leading to increased violence among the Karamojong, themselves.
