A recently released Akha prisoner estimated that as many as 10,000 prisoners, many of them Akha, crowd Thai prisons. The Akha equal only 0.1% of the Thai population yet are heavily over-represented in the prisons. The government accuses many Akha of participating in drug trafficking.
