THAILAND: Hill tribes embrace tourism to counter drug use

Several of Thailand’s Hill Tribes hope that profits from tourism ventures will help them fight increasing drug abuse among highlanders. The Muser, Lisu, Yao, Hmong, Karen, and Leu tribes are inviting tourists to experience the culture and traditions of highlanders through the eyes of indigenous peoples themselves. They hope that ‘eco-tours’ will provide new jobs and will be a viable source of income, as well as serve to educate tourists about the diverse cultures of Thailand’s minorities.
