Tasmania: Claims for Tasmanian Aboriginal status mishandled

A total of 1300 people have applied for inclusion on the indigenous electoral roll for the forthcoming Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Commission (ATSIC) elections, but efforts to officially determine who could claim Tasmanian Aboriginal status have resulted in many discrepancies. A Tasmanian man has been declared an Aborigine while his sister, who has the same parents, has been deemed non-Aboriginal. Twenty-four people have lodged appeals in the Federal Administrative Appeals Tribunal in Hobart against the decisions of the advisory committee.
