TAIWAN: Tao indigenous peoples demand the removal of nuclear waste from their lands

The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) plans to meet with representatives of the indigenous Tao to discuss a possible plan to remove nuclear waste from the Orchid Island (Lanyu) home of the Tao peoples. According to Lin Yi-Fu, Minister of Economic Affairs, the government respects the opinion of Tao peoples and will not permanently store nuclear waste on their island. Lin Yi-Fu has signed an agreement to exclude Tao land from a list of possible sites for building a permanent nuclear waste dump.
