A petition sponsored by Kurdish activists condemning the harsh living conditions of Syrian Kurds was addressed last week to United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and several world leaders. The document decries the Syrian government’s denial of the basic civil rights of 230,000 Syrian Kurds since it withdrew their citizenship in 1962. The petition calls for the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees office to help resettle them in other countries, or for concerted political pressure from other countries to help them regain their Syrian citizenship. The petition can be viewed online at (http://www.petitiononline.com/kurdax/petition.html).
