RWANDA: Indigenous peoples unite against marginalization

Indigenous east and central African peoples met in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, on Thursday to form a common front against their governments’ discriminatory practices. They are calling for greater representation in political life, land rights, and recognition as a group deserving “special assistance” by international bodies such as the UN. They are additionally requesting their governments ratify the International Labor Convention 169, recognizing the rights of all indigenous peoples.
