Estimates indicate that if exploited, oil reserves in the Nenets Autonomous District may yield as much as 30 million tons of oil a year. 15 companies, led by LUKoil-Komi, Polyarnoe Sliyanie, Severnaya Neft and TotalFinaElf are currently operating in the region, and more have plans to move in. The Nenets Autonomous Organization is dissatisfied with the companies’ activity, and is calling for further scrutiny.
