Eighteen people from the Ijaw tribe were killed last week, allegedly by a rival tribe, the Itsekiri. The Ijaws and Itsekiri vie for control of revenues from oil companies operating in southeastern Nigeria. The Itsekiri deny responsibility, blaming the incident on internal Ijaw community violence.
