PERU: Isolated indigenous peoples fighting for survival

The Federación Nativa de Madre de Dios y sus Afluentes (FENAMAD) -- the regional indigenous organization of Madre de Dios situated in south-east Peru, has been fighting at the national and international level in favor of the Nahua, or Yura, and Piro, two of eleven isolated groups in the country. While their territory should be protected by law, no official action has been taken against an increasing number of loggers – even with the government having established a territorial reserve on April 19, 2002. With the beginning of the dry season, now is the time when loggers go deeper into the Amazon and the danger of contact is imminent. Past contacts have resulted in many deaths. This was the case with the Nahua and Kugapakori peoples of the Region of Cuzco, when Shell and Development Perú were engaged in the Camisea sector during the 1980s.
