PERU: Camisea pipeline backers connected to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney

The Camisea gas pipeline project, criticized for potentially destroying the rainforest and harming Machiguenga, Yine, Nahua (Yora), Kirineri and Nanti (Kugapakori) peoples, will get principal financial support from the US Export Import Bank and the Interdevelopment Bank. The project is further expected to benefit companies like KB&R and Hunt Oil. KB&R is a subsidiary of Dick Cheney’s Halliburtin, and Hunt Oil raised about $105,000 for the Bush campaign. The Export Import Bank is led by Philip Merrill, an old friend of Cheney, while the Inter-American Development Bank is headed by major Bush donor Jose Fourquet, who helped mobilize the Hispanic vote for the republican.
