PERU: Amazon and Andean indigenous peoples seek new law to protect their rights

From September 9 to 11, the National Commission for Amazon, Andean and Afro-Peruvian peoples held a workshop entitled “Rights of Indigenous and Afro Peruvian Peoples”. Over 120 leaders from more than 70 organizations participated. The workshop sought to identify the legal gaps and shortcomings in current legislation related to the individual and collective rights of Peruvian ethnic groups. The main objective was to use their agreements and dialogue as a framework for proposing a new comprehensive law to protect their rights.
