Ilita Valdespino, a woman from Unión Chaco, was chosen by the General Congress of the indigenous Embera-Wounaan to serve a five-year term as governor of the Embera-Wounaan Comarca. Though only educated only through the second grade, Valdespino has been a local activist for many years. She is a member of the Arnulfista political party.
