NUNAVIK: School board relocation stalled by lack of government funds

The Kativik School Board has long overseen all education in Nunavik, the region of northern Quebec which may soon become semi-autonomous. Yet the school board’s main offices are in Montreal, more than 1,500 kilometers away. A plan to move the workers and offices has stalled, as the Quebec Ministry of Education has ceased providing funds for the relocation project. A Ministry official noted that the impending self-government agreement for Nunavik, which will consolidate all Nunavik organizations, “is in the minds of everybody,” perhaps contributing to the delay.
