NUNAVIK: 275 abandoned mines pose environmental hazard

A recent study done at the request of the Makivik Corporation and Kativik Regional Council in northern Quebec has found that an estimated 275 abandoned mining sites pose an environmental threat. Most are leftovers from an explosion on mining exploration from the 1940’s to the 1970’s, when there were no laws requiring cleanup. Most of the companies responsible for the waste, which includes concentrated acids and spilled oil, no longer exist.
