NEW ZEALAND: New internet domain first to be named after an indigenous people

A new secondary internet domain, ‘maori.nz’ was unanimously approved by the Council of Internet New Zealand on July 19, after an almost three year-long approval process. The new domain, which will be unmoderated, was proposed by the New Zealand Maori Internet Society/Te Whanau Ipurangi, and gained 91.7% approval in a straw poll conducted in March 2002.
