NEW ZEALAND: Maori tribe signs $42.39 million deed of settlement

The Ngati Awa and the New Zealand government have both signed a deed of settlement addressing land confiscation. Treaty Negotiations Minister Margaret Wilson stated that the redress package, which is the result of six years of negotiation, “includes an agreed historical account and formal Crown apology, cultural redress including the transfer of seven sites of significance to Ngati Awa, and a combination of cash and Crown-owned land up to the value of $42.39 million."
