NAMIBIA: Ovaherero petition for reparations

On August 29, Chief Kuaima Riruako of the Ovaherero people, a faction of the larger Hereros group, led a demonstration to the Parliament Building in Windhoek, Namibia, to deliver a petition to Prime Minister Nahas Angula. The petition urged the United Nations to deny the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) a permanent seat on the Security Council. The petition claims that offering Germany a permanent seat would be a "gross and insensitive travesty of justice," according to AllAfrica.com news service.

According to several articles on AllAfrica.com, the petition accuses Germany of racism, noting that the German government has compensated its Jewish residents for the holocaust, yet refuses to pay reparations for the mass extermination of the Ovaherero by German Colonial Forces from 1904-05. In a speech delivered on August 30, Riruako called on the FGR to "enter into an immediate, unconditional and sincere dialogue aimed at undoing the historical wrongs to the Ovaherero," according to AllAfrica.com. The petition appeals to the FRG "to unconditionally recognize the extermination of 80 percent of the Ovaherero as genocide and to pay compensation or reparations" to the survivors and their descendents.
