11 Amazigh demonstrators were arrested recently while attempting to demonstrate against the government’s confiscation of land in west-central Morocco on which the endangered Argan tree grows. The tree has been cared for and utilized by the Amazigh for centuries, and is considered by the community to be essential to Amazigh economy. Appropriation of the Argan may lead to displacement of local Amazigh in the area.
