MIDDLE EAST: International jurists needed in Commission

Human Rights Watch reported that although the Judicial Commission, instituted by Iraq’s Governing Council and responsible for trying members of the Iraqi Baath party on crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes, is a step in the right direction, international jurists must play a role in the court to assure its success. The court would be investigating past crimes such as the Anfal genocide against the Kurds, the use of chemical weapons against Iranian troops and Kurdish civilians, “disappearances”, the repression of the Marsh Arabs, and the expulsion of ethnic minorities in the North.
