MEXICO: Political obstruction of humanitarian aid in Chiapas

The Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO) Pastors for Peace project has issued an “Urgent Action Alert” to begin a letter-writing campaign regarding the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the indigenous peoples of Chiapas. Goods such as medicine, medical supplies, and computers are currently sitting at the Mexican border. Pastors for Peace has been successfully and consistently delivering aid to the communities of Chiapas for eight years. But due to “new customs regulations” cited by officials when the caravan arrived at the Mexican border, the goods have not reached their destination, and many supplies are fast approaching expiration dates. IFCO/Pastors for Peace speculate that the obstruction of the aid is politically motivated. To learn more about the campaign see the group’s website (http://www.ifconews.org).
