Several hundred Maasai and Samburu women who claim British soldiers based in
Kenya during the 1980s and 1990s raped them are taking their case to the United
Nations. Lawyer Joyce Majiwa said Kenyan and United Kingdom authorities were
not doing enough to help the women. Majiwa told BBC's Focus on Africa program
that investigations have not taken place and that Kenyan authorities had not
exerted pressure on the U.K. to provide compensation. However, the Kenyan Ministry
of Defense told BBC News that the British Royal Military Police were continuing
to investigate the claims and that 2,187 complaints of incidents occurring over
25 years have been recorded. Majiwa is confident that the United Nations will
take jurisdiction over the case.
