KENYA: Peace agreement among tribes in Isiolo

Leaders from the Boran, Meru, Somali, Turkana and Samburu communities of Isiolo came together last week and pledged to work for peace in the troubled region. Elders from the five tribes were charged with making lists of suspected perpetrators of recent violence to be handed over to the district security committee. Two weeks ago clashes left ten people dead; one councilor who attended the meeting described the offenders as unemployed youths "who are not in touch with their own people." Representatives of the provincial government were expected to attend but failed to show. The elders called for better security assistance from the state. Latest reports indicated that people displaced by the violence had begun to return to their homes.
