Uganda’s defense minister and Kenya’s internal security minister have agreed to share intelligence information and
encourage simultaneous disarmament to end cross-border disputes between the Turkana
and Pokot peoples in northwestern Kenya and the Karimgong and Sabiny peoples
in northeastern Uganda. Shaban Bantariza, the Ugandan army spokesman, told IRIN
News that a "committee of experts had been set up to design a plan to be
followed by both countries while implementing the disarmament strategy." The
indigenous communities have practiced cattle rustling for generations as a way
to manage their herd sizes, but arms trafficking and the availability of modern
weapons have increased the number of fatalities that result from cross-boarder
attacks.
