HONDURAS: Indigenous people crucify themselves in protest of government

The Committee of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH) staged a demonstration this week in front of the Government House in Tegucigalpa in which 18 activists hung themselves from large wooden crucifixes, each representing a department of Honduras. The display was an effort to demonstrate indigenous condemnation of social ills and the government’s lack of fulfillment of legal obligations to the country’s poorest communities. Among the issues addressed by the group were the high illiteracy rate, the need for more teachers in Intibuca, and international issues including globalization and the Central American Free Trade Agreement
