HAWAII: University Of Hawaii to recruit more Native Hawaiians

At the recent Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement conference, University of Hawaii president Evan Dobelle stated that he would make the university more accessible to Native Hawaiians and work towards greater equality and broader representation of Native Hawaiians in staff and faculty ranks. Native Hawaiians do not fill any administration positions, and hold only 3 percent of the faculty positions at the university. Dobelle and new university chancellor Peter Englert have developed a plan to invest more resources into the Center for Hawaiian Studies and to actively recruit more Native Hawaiian students for all programs. These measures are intended to create more role models for future generations, with the broader goal of bringing about social justice for Native Hawaiians.
