HAWAII: Native Hawaiians seek federal recognition

Native Hawaiians are fighting to gain federal recognition as an indigenous people. As a part of this push they are seeking to organize a native governing body, which would be recognized by other governments. Recognition would enable native Hawaiians to have greater control over their medical care, education, and economic development. Self-determination would further imply that they would no longer be grouped in the same category as Native Americans.
