GREECE: Report details destruction, dispossession of Roma communities

The European Roma Rights Center and Greek Helsinki Monitor announced this week the publication of a report on the human rights situation of Roma in Greece. The report documents what Greek authorities routinely call “cleaning operations”, essentially forced evictions of Roma from their homes and destruction of their property. The report states that many Roma in Greece live in racially segregated ghettos, and their living conditions are substandard. The groups claim that the Roma housing policy reflects a deeper problem – the conscious and systematic exclusion of Roma from Greek society and services.
