GHANA: Agortume embrace ancestral ties to neighboring peoples

The Agortume people of the Volta region of Ghana last week made an official declaration of solidarity with the Ga-Adangme people. Nene Nuer Keteku III, the chief of the Agortume Traditional Area, led a delegation to participate in this year’s “Ngmayem” festival, where he bucked local trends by pronouncing his people’s kinship with the Ga-Adangme, and by calling on traditional rulers throughout the country to pursue stronger ties with each other. The Agortume are Kente weavers, fishermen and farmers. As evidence of their relation to the Adangme peoples, they cited the fact that many Agortume speak Adangme fluently, and that they share many of the same customs and rituals.
