Since 1996, the Achuar indigenous peoples of Kapawi, Ecuador, have prevented oil exploitation in their region through the creation of the Kapawi Ecolodge and Reserve. Unlike many other ecotourism projects in Latin America that are run by large and often foreign companies, the Kapawi Ecolodge is run and managed in large part by Achuar people.
