DJIBOUTI: Pastoral regions face worsening food shortages

On October 21, the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS NET), funded by U.S. Agency for International Development, reported that northwest and southeast pastoral regions of Djibouti are likely to experience worsening food shortages in the coming six months as a result of inadequate rainfall since July. It is likely that remaining pastures will be insufficient to sustain livestock needs of pastoral groups such as the Issa until the rainy season beginning in April. FEWS NET expects a decrease in milk and butter production, a decline in animal conditions and sales prices, and an increase in the price of food staples. IRIN News reports delays in school openings due to families moving in search of suitable grazing lands.
