COLOMBIA: Emberá Katío seize dam offices in protest

On October 25, 20 Emberá Katío leaders took over the office of the Urrá company at Montería, Córdoba, while over 400 Emberá Katío positioned themselves at Urrá dam installations in protest of the environmental damaged caused by the construction of the Urrá dam and the Colombian conflict. Emberá Katío say that their needs are being ignored both by the government and dam officials. They want immediate talks opened with company and indigenous leaders present to uphold the agreement made in April 2000. Etnias de Colombia confirmed their continued presence on November 4, which also marked ten years of struggle between the Emberá Katío and the Urrá oil company.
