CHILE: Six-year struggle to save ancestral land ends with cash settlement for Pehuenche Indigenous women

Four Pehuenche women recently signed a settlement that would allow the building of a hydroelectric dam in southern Chile. For the last six years the women have battled the Chilean Government and Endesa to stop the building of a hydroelectric dam that would flood Pehuenche ancestral homes. After months of debate, the women agreed to settle for US$1.2 million dollars, some land, and smaller cash settlements for their immediate families.
