CANADA: Toronto and its suburbs at center of Native land claim

The Mississauga Tribe recently filed a 250,000 acre land claim encompassing Toronto and its surrounding suburbs. Ownership records date back to 1787 when a representative of King George III signed a treaty with the Mississaugas for land north of Lake Ontario but left the deed unsigned. The English returned in 1805 and offered the Mississaugas ten shillings ($1.20) for the land, but the tribe contends that there was never an official transfer. Today, it is estimated that land without buildings in the Toronto area is worth $50,000 to $1 million per acre, making this one of the most expensive land claims to date.
