CANADA: Outcomes of new hydro project uncertain

Without the mention of the Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, or Inuit people residing in the area, a document released last week by the state of Quebec details the planned development of the Eastmain-Rupert hydroelectric project. Although the tribes realize the need for updated electric infrastructure, they fear a negative impact on the surrounding waters and marine life. The plan would alter the flow of rivers that empty into James Bay and Hudson Bay. Several environmental committees are due to analyze the potential outcomes.
