CANADA: Government applauds U.S. Senate vote against drilling in ANWR

The Canadian Environment Minister praised the recent Senate vote against opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling. In a striking contrast with the U.S. government’s policies, Canada has long lobbied U.S. senators to vote against such measures, concerned that drilling would eliminate important calving ground for the Porcupine caribou herd, on which the Gwich’in people in both northeastern Alaska and northwestern Canada depend.
