BULGARIA: Government plans equal education for Romani children

The Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science issued a document this month outlining plans to ensure the integration of minority children into the mainstream education system. The European Roma Rights Center (ERCC) applauded the Ministry’s directive to eliminate inferior all-Romani schools in Romani neighborhoods and to stop the practice of sending Romani children to schools for the mentally disabled. In a letter to the Minister of Education and Science, ERCC noted the success of existing initiatives spearheaded by Romani NGOs to encourage the desegregation of Romani children in Bulgaria.
